Avoid unnecessary tooth decay with regular checkups from 9th Line Dental in Mississauga. Along with daily brushing and flossing, fluoride treatments and a proper diet, routine visits with us are critical in maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Good hygiene will keep your mouth healthy and prevent the need for potentially costly restorations.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay results from the interaction of naturally occurring bacteria with sugars common in our everyday diet. The interaction produces acids that break down the hard, outer layer (enamel) of your teeth. This prolonged exposure to acid will eventually result in a cavity. At 9th Line Dental, our Mississauga dentists can remove the decay, fill the tooth and restore it to a healthy state. Extensive decay can cause nerve damage and threaten the integrity of your tooth. In these cases, a root canal or crown may be necessary.
Our GTA dentists are skilled in scaling, which involves the scraping and removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) from the tooth. This procedure can be done both below and above the gum line. At your regular cleanings, scaling is typically done at the crown of the tooth. In special circumstances, it may be necessary for us to go below the gum line in order to remove disease-causing bacteria from the root surface. In more advanced situations, flap surgery or gingivectomy can be done to give our dentists access to an infected tooth root.
